What’s Your Love Language?

Everyone knows there are a million different ways to show love — maybe it’s a gorgeous bouquet of your favorite flowers, a nice foot rub at the end of the day, or something as simple as a kiss. No one is confused about how to show love, but did you know that there are also ways to receive love? Psychologists now know that everyone receives love in a different way.

It’s called your love language.

What is a love language?

Like we said, everyone shows love in a bunch of different ways, and everyone has their own idea of what a loving gesture is. But, here’s the crazy part: the trick to nurturing a loving relationship isn’t projecting your idea of love, but understanding others’ and being able to give them love in that way.

Confusing? Okay, let’s break it down.

Let’s say you’re in a relationship, and your partner seems distant. You’ve tried everything: you’ve sent the flowers, you’ve cooked for them, bought some toys, and even booked a romantic getaway, but no matter what you do everything kinda falls flat.

So what’s the problem? You might not be speaking their love language.

There are five very specific love languages, and everyone fits into one. Let’s go through them one at a time, because all this week we’re going to talk about how you can use Love Languages in your personal and professional life!

Words of Affirmation

The first love language is an easy one. Words of affirmation is exactly what it sounds like: people who speak this love language don’t want gestures, they want kind words. On the flipside, fighting can be a huge deal breaker, so understanding the power of words is crucial for this love language!

Acts of Service

We’re not talking volunteer work! Acts of service is more about taking some of the weight off of your partner’s shoulders, or offering them a kind gesture. Didn’t know that doing the dishes could be considered an act of love? Well now you do!

Receiving Gifts

The most important thing about people who speak this love language is not that they’re materialistic…far from it. Gifts don’t have to be crazy expensive, they just have to be thoughtful. Understanding that is a huge part of scoring points with someone who speaks this love language, because you could have more success with a single flower if it truly means something to them.

Quality Time

If you’re super busy, you may have to set some time aside if you’re in a relationship with someone who speaks this love language. Spending quality time doesn’t mean a token night out, it’s all about being present in the moment…which means that quality time could just mean a meal at home with no phones allowed. Giving your partner not only time, but attention is the key.

Physical Touch

People who communicate love through physical touch tend to be, well, touchy. They like to hug, ruffle hair, hold hands. Rejecting the physicality of someone who communicates with physical touch can be just as painful as a smack to the face, so if you’re in a relationship with someone who loves to get their touchy-feely on, be sure to be a willing recipient.

Now that you know the five Love Languages, it’s time to consider which one you speak…and more importantly, which one your partner speaks.
